Asian Earthquake and Tsunami Phishing

Oh, well…I said this would happen soon, and lo and behold I now have an example of the first Phishing scam using the disaster to try and fleece well-meaning individuals.

So, what can I tell you about this scam?

The scam as it is being distributed now, arrives as an e-mail with the following headers:

From: “Mercy Corps” hbvzdvgxludfg@pop.com.br
Reply-To
: “Mercy Corps” hbvzdvgxludfg@pop.com.br

Subject: Tsunami Relief Fund

When it is opened in an HTML enabled mail client [such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Notes, etc.], it will look something like this:

Paypal is being used as the fund collection mechanism in this example of the scam.

The ISPs that are hosting the bogus site are, so far, based in Brazil and Poland.

So, be careful out there, if you want to donate then go to the “real” site not the “phoney” one which you will get if you clicked on the link in the Phishing scam e-mail.
